Battle Abbey: Applying To Independent Schools

Step By step Guide for Independent School Admission

If you’re considering applying to an independent school like Battle Abbey Senior School, it’s essential to understand the application process and requirements. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the steps, ensuring a smooth and informed application journey.

Introduction

Prior to submitting a formal application, we encourage parents to make use of all the opportunities to find out more about what Battle Abbey School can offer;

  • Request a Prospectus or any of the supplementary information, such as the Scholarship and Entrance, GCSE and Sixth Form booklets.
  • Attend an Open Day.
  • Arrange a visit to the school for a personal meeting with the Headteacher and a tour of the school with one or more of our current pupils as guides. If a personal visit is difficult we can arrange Zoom or Skype meetings instead.
  • Submit the Registration Form to formally register the child as a candidate for entry.

Prospective students are invited to join us at one of our Enrichment Days which are held throughout the year.  These take place on a Saturday and groups of children spend the day participating in a series of ‘Masterclasses’.  These days introduce the children to some key members of staff and give a taste of what teaching at the school is like.

We also offer individual Taster Days when the child is invited to spend a regular school day with their prospective future class mates.  Prospective boarding students can incorporate a night in boarding if a suitable bed space is available.

For all information and arrangements please contact the Admissions Office on registrar@battleabbeyschool.com or 01424 772385

Assessment

Battle Abbey is a mixed ability school and we welcome applications from all pupils, provided they can access the mainstream curriculum.

We have formal entry and assessments procedures for pupils joining the school into Years 7, 9 and 12.   Entry into other year groups may be possible if places are available and these applicants will be individually assessed.

Entry into Year 7 and Year 9

The assessments for entry into Year 7 and Year 9 are held annually in November, Year 7 candidates sitting their assessments when in Year 6 and Year 9 candidates when in Year 8.  Our Scholarship and Entrance Booklet is currently under review. Please contact admissions@battleabbeyschool.com for more details.

The entrance assessments are primarily used for setting purposes and in considering a child for entry we look at recommendations/reports from their current school and all prospective pupils meet our Headteacher or other member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Children who are academically gifted will be considered for an Academic Scholarship award.  We also offer scholarships in Music, Drama, Performing Arts, Art, Sport and Computing.

Scholarships carry a financial benefit which can be worth up to 20% of the cost of the fees.

Sixth Form Entry

We offer places for Year 12 entry based on a student’s predicted GCSE grades.

We encourage interested families to visit our Sixth Form Open Evening, which is held annually in October.

We offer Academic, Art, Music, Drama, Performing Arts and Sports scholarships with top academic scholarship awards being worth up to 50% of the cost of the fees.
