About

Our Ethos

From the Nursery through to the Abbey, we are a caring and highly regarded family school with exceptional pastoral care and sensitive discipline, accompanied by strong academic results, focusing on the importance of each individual child. With our enviable locations, impressive and talented students, loyal and dedicated teachers, international dimension provided by our wonderful boarding community and our distinctive ethos based on kindness, compassion, friendship, mutual respect and trust – Battle Abbey is a special place to study. The School’s rich history and many traditions are based on Christian values and the school welcomes students and families from all faiths and none.

It combines the modern with the traditional in terms of facilities and academic outlook and has an innovative and engaging approach to teaching and learning. In addition, the promotion of soft skills, self-confidence, concern for others, personal responsibility and leadership means that the School provides a first rate all-round education where students feel they belong and where they invariably develop academically, socially and emotionally.

CARING FAMILY ATMOSPHERE, LONG-TERM FRIENDSHIPS

Students thrive in the warm and purposeful environment at Battle Abbey and feel a deep affection for their school. From their first days in the Prep School, they are encouraged to be curious and creative, always striving to achieve their best. They come to understand the satisfaction that comes from hard work, both inside and outside the classroom. Students are taught to compete with determination in all aspects of school life, while also learning the importance of service, support, and empathy. They grow as individuals and as team players, recognising that good manners and conduct truly matter. Through interactions with peers from around the world and people of all ages, they develop confidence and respect for others. Along the way, they form lasting friendships, enjoy themselves in a safe and nurturing setting, and build strong bonds with their dedicated and encouraging teachers.

We also offer a distinctive enrichment programme that introduces students to subjects, ideas, and issues beyond the standard exam curriculum. In addition, we excel at uncovering hidden talents and abilities in our students—skills they may not even realise they have—and we work hard to nurture these emerging strengths and interests. While academic excellence is highly valued, we take equal pride in our pupils’ accomplishments across all areas. Our students consistently reach their full potential, supported by exceptional pastoral care and strong, trusting relationships. Ultimately, the School seeks to cultivate passionate, enthusiastic lifelong learners and to inspire young people to become positive, engaged members of their communities—locally, nationally, and globally.

Embracing continuous improvement, it provides high quality pastoral care and sensitive discipline, allowing excellent academic outcomes.

Located in a unique historical setting, the School’s rich past and many of its traditions are based on Christian values but importantly, the School welcomes students from all faiths and none.

The Governors regard the safeguarding of children as paramount in the school and work to ensure that this is reflected in all elements of school life.

Specific aims are:

  • To inspire pupils to maximise their potential in all they undertake; to acknowledge and reward the achievements of each individual according to their aptitudes and interests.
  • To promote balanced social development through sensitive pastoral care within our structured day and boarding community.
  • To prepare pupils for life after School by providing an all-round education in which pupils of all ages are valued as individuals and develop the self-respect, self-confidence and empathy for the needs and desires of others that will enable them to contribute positively to our changing world.
