We are delighted to announce that BAS pupil Jake Strickson (Year 11) has been awarded the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship — the first BAS student to achieve this honour.
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is one of the UK’s most respected awards for aspiring engineers, designed to identify, inspire and nurture future leaders in engineering. The scholarship supports high-potential students through both financial assistance and invaluable industry mentoring and each year, thousands of students apply, with only around 600 invited to interview.
As part of the rigorous selection process, Jake was required to submit a detailed proposal for an original engineering project. He then undertook interviews with established industry professionals.
Jake will now benefit from the financial award that comes with the scholarship and will receive ongoing mentoring from industry experts as he progresses towards a future career in an engineering related field. The scholarship is also widely recognised by universities and employers, making it a standout addition to his CV.
This achievement also reflects the strength of engineering and STEAM education at BAS. Our departments place a strong emphasis on innovation, problem-solving and real-world application, offering students a wide range of project-based opportunities to develop their skills. From conceptual design work to hands-on practical challenges, pupils are encouraged to think creatively and engage deeply with the engineering process—qualities clearly exemplified by Jake’s success.
Congratulations, Jake, on this outstanding accomplishment—we look forward to seeing what you achieve next.
