Libby in top 1% nationally!

Libby P (Year 9) recently took part in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) challenge — a national mathematics competition for pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 — and we are delighted to share her outstanding achievement.

Libby was awarded a Gold certificate in the Grey Kangaroo 2026, scoring an exceptional 113 out of 135. To put this into perspective, a minimum score of 101 is required for Gold, making her result particularly impressive.

She was also the only student in the school to progress to this follow-on round, highlighting both the difficulty of the competition and the strength of her performance — especially given the high standard of mathematicians at Battle Abbey.

This achievement places Libby among the top 1% of Year 9–11 mathematicians in the UK. What makes this even more remarkable is that she accomplished this as a Year 9 pupil, the youngest eligible year group — a first for Battle Abbey and a truly notable milestone.

Over the years, many exceptional mathematicians have been celebrated on the Maths Corridor honours board, and we have no doubt that Libby’s name will soon join them.
