A New Chapter: Leeford Lodge Boarding House Officially Opened

Leeford Lodge Boarding House officially opened! A moment of pride and celebration in Whatlington last week as we formally marked the opening of our Leeford Lodge Boarding House. The grand opening was inaugurated with a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mr Andrew Blackman, HM Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex. Set within the rolling landscape of East Sussex, Leeford Lodge has been transformed from a former countryside hotel into a modern boarding house, designed to provide a welcoming, supportive and high-quality residential environment for pupils from around the world. While the building’s past as a hotel is still evident in its elegant proportions, excellent standard of accommodation and peaceful setting, its future is firmly focused on education, community and care. Leeford Lodge Boarding House has been carefully refurbished to balance comfort with purpose. Former guest rooms have been adapted into well-appointed boarding accommodation, while shared spaces encourage a sense of belonging, community and wellbeing. The extensive grounds, once enjoyed by hotel guests, now offer a tranquil backdrop for study, reflection and outdoor activity. The opening ceremony brought together local residents, community leaders, staff, and invited guests. The Lord-Lieutenant lauded the project for its sensitive redevelopment, its high standard of facilities and its contribution to the area. He was also very complimentary about the Battle Abbey pupils who conducted tours of the Boarding House and chatted with guests over refreshments after the ceremony. The event also marked a special moment of recognition for School Governor and former Chair of Governors, Ian Mercer, who was praised for his outstanding thirty years of service to the school. In his honour, the Boarding House’s entertainment and social hub was formally dedicated in his name, marked by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. Ian has been closely involved with the school since the early 1980s, serving on the Board of Governors for more than three decades, including ten years as Chair. His long-standing commitment and leadership have played a significant role in shaping the school community, and the dedication stands as a lasting tribute to his contribution.
